One of the suspects arrested for the murder of an off duty police officer, Siyabonga Radebe, is his sister.
One of the four suspects was shot dead by police after he allegedly fought them during the arrest at Umlazi W section, about ten minutes away from where Radebe was shot last week.
The suspects, including Radebe’s sister, cannot be named as they haven’t appeared in court yet.
Provincial police said they would appear in court soon.
A family member, who did not want to be named, said the family was shocked.
“This is a big embarrassment to us as a family. I did not think that our own would be implicated in this case.”
While the family welcomed the arrest, the alleged involvement of Radebe’s sister has triggered tensions within the grieving family.
“We will leave it all in the hands of the police to conclude the work they have started.”
The family member declined to comment further.
Radebe was shot while playing snooker with his friends at Cibane’s Tavern in Umlazi C.
His close friend rushed him to hospital but he died moments later.
He was still paying lobola for his girlfriend, with whom he has a child who is less than a year old.
Radebe had also recently bought his home at Umlazi E section and was planning to tie the knot early next year.
Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele came out guns blazing against the killing of cops.
“The arrest was an indication that cops were determined in tracking down all suspects who are involved in criminal activities.
“The members of the community must always remember that an attack on a police officer is an attack on the nation,” Mbele said.
