Maskandi giant Khuzani Mpungose has released his tenth studio album, titled Inja Nogodo, which is likely to be “the bearer of the Song of the Year.”
Khuzani, who is also known by his clan name “Khuba”, released the 14 track-long album on Friday.
Besides it being a work of art in terms of production, creativity and lyricism, what makes this album unique is its sixth track. The song is called “Isiqomuqomu” which according to Khuzani is someone who doesn’t know anything: an empty tin making the loudest noise.
“Isiqomuqomu” is an epic 16 minute-long song, and is an address to the people who hate him for taking the 2020 Song of the Year with his hit “Ijele”.
On the song, Khuzani, who recently became the first Maskandi artist to have his own reality TV show on SABC 1, also addresses former Ukhozi FM radio presenter Ngizwe Mchunu.
Mchunu has found success as a prominent social media influencer ever since he was arrested for inciting violence during the July unrest.
Ngizwe Mchunu had made headlines in November when he shared a recording of himself begging Ukhozi FM to only play Maskandi songs on the New Year’s Eve Song of the Year Competition before 10pm. He asked the station to “give other genres a chance” to win the much contested Song of the Year at midnight on the dot.
In the song, Khuzani calls Mchunu a “hypocrite” and a “liar”, saying Ngizwe was the one who fought for Maskandi to win the Song of the Year when he was still presenting a traditional music show on Ukhozi FM.
In the past three years it has become almost impossible for other South African music genres, such as house music Kwaito amongst others to win the annual Song of the Year competition on Ukhozi FM.
The station is based in KwaZulu-Natal province where most Maskandi fans and artists are based.
To pour more salt on the wound, Khuzani’s music rival Igcokama Elisha also released his 14 track-long album titled AmaVolo Volo on Friday.
This further slashes the chances of a different genre taking home the much sought after Song of the Year spot at the end of the month.
