Khuzani Mpungose is flying the maskandi flag high after scooping a major international award in Los Angeles.
The 35-year-old KwaZulu-Natal-born artist won Best Independent Artist (African) at the Hollywood and African Prestigious Awards (HAPA Awards), held in the United States.
The award is a major moment in Mpungose’s career, and for the maskandi genre, which is finally getting the global recognition many fans feel it deserves.
Often called the “heartbeat of rural South Africa”, maskandi is known for its powerful storytelling, spiritual depth and connection to Zulu culture and everyday life.
Mpungose was also nominated for Best Male Artist (African).
He said the win is both an honour and a responsibility.
“This award is a blessing. It shows that maskandi is not just music, it is history, identity, and a voice for our people,” he said.
“To see it recognised on a global stage fills me with pride and humility. This win belongs to every supporter who has walked with me.”
He said he is committed to protecting traditional music in a modern world, and wants more young artists to embrace their roots.
“This is not just about me. It’s about showing the world that our music has meaning and power.”
His win comes as more African genres like Amapiano, Afro-pop and African soul capture global attention.
Mpungose says it proves that artists with real stories, spiritual connection and lived experience are finally getting their moment on the world stage.
