Kaizer Chiefs went one up in the CAF Champions League preliminary round first-leg tie on Sunday afternoon when they beat PWD Bamenda by one goal to nil in Limbe, Cameroon.
But it was hardly an inspired performance: the AmaKhosi were goalless for almost the entire match until Eric Mathoho found the net with a header ten minutes from time.
Chiefs, who have struggled to find a winning path this season, qualified for the Champions League as runners-up in the Absa Premiership last season.
PWD Bamenda are the champions of Cameroon.
Chiefs got off to a slow start and keeper Itumeleng Khune was kept busy in the first stanza, making one diving save to keep the scores level at the break.
The hosts had one more big chance to level things after Daniel Cardoso gave away a penalty in the 87thminute. However, Khune once more came to the rescue with a heroic save.
Chiefs earned a vital three points away from home. The return leg will take place next weekend at the FNB Stadium.
