- The mother of three encourages other single moms to focus on healing and seeing their children as individuals.
Singer Kelly Khumalo spoke about how hard it is to raise a child who looks just like their abusive father.
Her first child is her son Christian, whom she had with musician Jub Jub. This relationship ended badly, with Kelly speaking out about suffering abuse at his hands.
Kelly then had a daughter named Tingo with Senzo Meyiwa, the Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates goalkeeper who was killed in 2014.
Her youngest child is Luna, a daughter she reportedly had with former Kaizer Chiefs player Mthokozisi Yende.
In a video that has gone viral, the mother of three opened up about a struggle many single mums face but rarely talk about.
“There’s one thing that we probably never talk about, especially as single mums — raising children or a child of a man who physically abused you, even more so when that child looks exactly like that person,” she said.
“How much healing it takes to raise a child and to see the child for who they are and not who their father is.”
Kelly spoke about how single mothers must be strong when facing daily reminders of their past trauma.
“How boldly one has to be to see beyond what is a constant reminder of someone who hurt you. It’s worse if that person continues to hurt you in their absence… but you continue to be a great mum; you choose to be a great mum,” she said.
The singer encouraged other mothers to focus on seeing themselves in their children rather than their abusive ex-partners.
“Choose to see you in them, rather than the person who hurt you. It’s tough. We don’t talk about it, but it’s tough,” she said.
