Kaizer Chiefs weather Covid storm to make winning return

Kaizer Chiefs bagged three points on their return from a two-week “sick leave” with a comfortable 2-0 win over Sekhukhune United in the DStv Premiership encounter on Sunday night.

The Amakhosi had gone over two weeks without playing a competitive match after a Covid-19 outbreak in their camp depleted their squad.

Arthur Zwane took charge of Chiefs with most of the first team regulars out, including head coach Stuart Baxter. Zwane was forced to make six charges from the team that won against Swallows over two weeks ago.

Sunday’s win saw them climb the log table from sixth place to second and leapfrog their Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates.

The three points will come in handy for Amakhosi should things not go their way after they missed their last two games without first getting permission from the league.

On Monday Chiefs might have a slight idea of what could happen to them after missing fixtures against Cape Town City and Golden Arrows. Premier Soccer League (PSL) chairman Dr Irvin Khoza is expected to address the media on several issues.

Chiefs’ two “postponed” matches are expected to be discussed. The PSL is yet to respond to a letter sent by Amakhosi last Friday, in which they asked to have five of their matches postponed.

This came after Chiefs had no less than 36 members of the team test positive for Covid-19.

Khoza is expected to address the two incidents and whether or not Chiefs will forfeit those points from those matches.

Khoza might also discuss the issue of vacant posts at the club. Nande Becker resigned from his post at the end of November and his role is yet to be filled.

Former league prosecutor Zola Majavu has been linked with the return to the position but it is yet to be confirmed.
