Gospel singer Jumbo Nyangiwe surprised fans at the Mthandeni Summer Experience after performing songs linked to maskandi star Khuzani Mpungose.
The event took place on Saturday at Mkhaliphi Stadium in Mdletsheni village, north of KwaZulu-Natal.
The show was organised by award winning maskandi artist Mthandeni SK Manqele, known to fans as Igcokama Elisha.
During his set, Jumbo performed songs linked to Khuzani Mpungose, who is seen as Mthandeni’s rival in the maskandi music scene.
Despite the surprise, many fans sang along and danced during Jumbo’s performance.
The performance later caused debate on social media.
Some supporters of Mthandeni criticised Jumbo and told him to stick to gospel music. Others praised him and said the performance helped bring fans of the two artists together.
Musa Nkani posted on Facebook and told Jumbo to stop singing maskandi songs.
Nkani said Jumbo should focus only on gospel music.
Jumbo responded and said no one would control or bully him about what he performs on stage.
He later thanked maskandi fans for enjoying his performance. He also thanked Mthandeni and the event organisers for inviting him to perform.
The Mthandeni Summer Experience was described by organisers as a success.
Tickets were sold out and thousands of people attended the event in Mdletsheni village.
Mthandeni said this year’s concert was dedicated to fans born in the 1980s and 1990s.
He said fans from different age groups enjoy different styles of his music.
Last year, Mthandeni caused debate after saying the event was dedicated to fans born from the year 2000.
The event is supported by the KwaZulu-Natal government and local business people and was started to bring entertainment to rural communities.
