Madodana Vodloza had no money and no experience with swimming pools when he decided to start his own business.
The 36-year-old from Johannesburg was working in a restaurant when he came across the pool industry on Facebook.
“I started the business with no capital. I did not know anything about swimming pools. I was scrolling on Facebook when I came across it,” he said.
Vodloza began asking people who were already doing pool work for jobs. He watched, learnt and slowly built his skills.
He officially started MVS Global Pools in 2014. The Greenstone-based company builds, renovates and maintains swimming pools. It also handles pump installation and repairs, fibreglass work, marbelite, leak repairs and regular pool cleaning.
The business now employs eleven people and travels across South Africa for work.
Vodloza said growing the business also means changing the lives of his workers and their families.
He said being young and black in a white-dominated industry has pushed him to work harder and stand out. Being his own boss has given him control over his future.
During the 2020 lockdown, the business survived when many others closed. More people stayed home and used their pools, leading to more cleaning and maintenance work.
Vodloza said his goal is to grow the business beyond South Africa and take it to a global stage.
