High school learners across South Africa can now enter the fourth annual Mobireadathon Digital Reading Competition, launched by the City of Johannesburg Library and Information Services (CoJ LIS).
The competition encourages learners to use their cellphones for reading and learning. This year’s theme is Online Safety, focusing on using the internet responsibly and securely.
Learners register on the City’s eLearning website, www.cojelearning.org.za, where they read or download stories and complete quizzes. Winners are chosen based on how accurately and quickly they answer quiz questions.
The reading content includes AI-generated stories, African folklore and real-life stories from senior citizens. The mix of content helps promote creativity, culture and online awareness.
Beyond reading, learners also pick up practical digital skills. These include registering online, completing digital forms and using online learning platforms.
The competition supports the Africa Online Safety campaign led by Joburg Libraries.
Phase one runs from 9 February to 25 April 2026 and is open to high school learners in all provinces. Semi-finalists will be selected nationally, and the school with the most participants will receive a provincial prize. Phase two begins from 20 June 2026 and focuses on Grade 8 finalists.
The competition has grown from just 55 learners in 2022 to 2,900 in 2025. It is supported by Pick n Pay School Club and Universal Knowledge Software.
