South African muso Nomcebo Zikode, who penned and sang the super-hit Jerusalema, is fed up at being looked down upon by music fans.
She took to social media to express her ire after one fan suggested that Nomcebo should write a post thanking Jerusalema collaborator Master KG for discovering her.
The drama began on Wednesday morning, after Nomcebo shared a post written by none other than Sadio Mane, the Liverpool and Senegal winger.
Mane, a famously humble figure among football’s egos, had written that he shouldn’t need an expensive phone in order to gain others’ acceptance.
A “fan,” who’s known on social media as Miyelani Mabasa, wrote back a seemingly irrelevant response, insisting that Nomcebo must write a post thanking Master KG.
This did not sit at all well with the Emazulwini singer, who told Mabasa that she did not owe her career to Master KG because they contributed 50/50 to Jerusalema.
In a response which she later deleted, Nomcebo replied: “No problem Limpopo boy, have you told him to do the same with me because I was the one who wrote the song?”
“I’m famous today because the beats in that song are his,” she sarcastically continued.
And, sitting down the ill-mannered fan, she wrote: “Unless you are one of those who think that Master KG is my boss and I’m paid by him? I’m the one who wrote the lyrics from A to Z, shame on you my boy.”
Nomcebo went on to say she was famous long before she met Master KG. She says that if anyone deserves her thanks, it’s DJ Ganyani. He not only discovered her, she said, but he has stuck by her across her 14 years spent in the music industry.
“DJ Ganyani deserves all the praise for discovering me when we made the Emazulwini song together. I’m tired of explaining myself and being looked down on.”
Scrolla.Africa reached out to Nomcebo for comment, but she has not yet responded.
Since its release, Jerusalema has been astronomically successful. It has been viewed more than 300 million times on YouTube and has dominated charts across the globe.
