Zambia’s electoral commission has confirmed that opposition candidate Hakainde Hichilema has won last week’s presidential election.
Hichilema beat outgoing President Edgar Lungu by a huge margin of more than a million votes, the commission said.
It is the sixth time Hichilema has run for election, and his supporters have been celebrating on the streets of Lusaka.Lungu’s defeat followed secret talks over the weekend in which he negotiated for immunity from prosecution should he leave office.
