Elon Musk has broken the Guinness World Record for losing the most personal money ever.
According to the Guinness World Record (GWR), Musk has broken the world record for the “largest loss of personal fortune in history”.
Forbes estimated that Elon Musk had lost around $182 billion since November 2021, however, it also noted that other sources indicated the figure is closer to $200 billion.
Musk is not the first billionaire to have lost large personal fortunes. Masayoshi Son, Softbank founder and CEO, was the previous record holder, losing a much lower $58.6 billion.
According to Bloomberg, Musk’s net worth dropped from $320 billion in November 2021 to $137 billion as of January 2023.
The drop was due to Tesla shares, responsible for most of Musk’s wealth, going into free fall last year, dropping 65% in 2022.
The drastic fall picked up speed after Musk bought Twitter in October, losing another $44 billion.
The amazing takeover, coupled with Musk’s polarising behaviour on the platform, sparked the biggest Tesla stock sell-off since the company went public in 2010.
According to the latest Forbes estimates, Musk is worth $144.4 billion.
