Gauteng Premier and ANC provincial chairperson Panyaza Lesufi along with Ekurhuleni Mayor Dr Nkosindiphile Xhakaza cast their votes at the Thuto Ke Maatla Engineering School of Specialisation in Tembisa on Wednesday.

Lesufi, who has become popular because of the jobs he provided to young people in the township, has won many hearts, especially those of the youth.

He believes the ruling party will do well in these highly contested elections.

But he admitted “this campaign was very tough”.

He recalled the first democratic election in 1994 and said: “I was just a mere agent of the ANC in 1994. I have seen all the elections, but this one is going to be very difficult.

“It is very difficult because the ANC was changing the engine of an aeroplane while the aeroplane was airborne. We have to elevate the renewal of the ANC while, at the same time, we have to contest the elections.”

He, however, praised the hard work and fierce fight he and his party put up during the campaign. “We have worked very hard. It has been difficult because everyone was against us, including some of you journalists,” he said.

A voter who only introduced himself as Sboniso said he loves the ANC and had voted for the party.

Another four-time voter, who gave his name only as Xolani, said the mushrooming of new parties disturbs the progress made by the ruling ANC.

He said he trusts his vote will make a big change in his life.
