Former UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya responded to a drink driving charge laid against him in Auckland, New Zealand on Sunday.
According to The New Zealand Herald, the 34-year-old drove a car on 19 August 2023 with 87 milligrams of alcohol in his system per 100 millilitres of blood — 37 milligrams higher than the New Zealand legal limit of 50 milligrams per 100.
The Nigeria-born New Zealander apologised to his followers for his “unacceptable” actions at a hearing; and will return to court for sentencing in January.
“I am disappointed with my decision to drive. It was wrong. I know that people might follow me and I want them to know I do not think this behaviour is acceptable,” he said per BBC.
“I want to apologise to the community, my family and my team for the decision I made to get behind the wheel after drinking at a dinner.”
Adesanya was last in action when he lost his middleweight title to Sean Strickland at UFC 293 earlier this month.
