‘I’m a cheat, but I still want R9-million’ — fake doctor

By Rorisang Modiba

Matthew Lani, a South African TikToker, went viral by posing as a doctor and giving medical advice on his social media pages.

He was arrested last year after falsely claiming to be a Wits and Cambridge University graduate, which both universities denied.

However, being a fake doctor hasn’t stopped him from suing the Health Department. He claims the security guards at Helen Joseph Hospital mistreated him when he was caught at the hospital.

Now, Lani wants R9-million for being wrongly arrested and held by the hospital guards, Fakaza reported.

“It is our instructions that on or about 29 October 2023, our client was maliciously and unlawfully arrested and detained by security personnel of Potlako Security & Cleaning Services stationed at Helen Joseph Hospital whose ranks are unknown to our client,” Lani’s lawyers wrote.

“It is our instructions that our client was wrongfully and maliciously arrested and detained without an arrest warrant at Helen Joseph Hospital.”
