Telenovela Gomora‘s star character Don, a notorious gangster played by actor Israel Matseke Zulu, has been forced to leave the drama as he is suffering from an unspecified illness.
Don, the car hijacking mastermind, goes out in style when he is shot dead by the mother of his son, Zodwa.
Zulu, a talented Alexandra-born actor, announced that he was leaving the most-watched telenovela due to illness.
In a statement issued on Monday the 47-year-old admitted to an illness that makes him unable to do what he loves most, but he did not reveal what the illness is.
“It is true that I have been diagnosed with a disease which severely affected the functioning of my legs making it difficult for me to walk properly and function on set during filming,” he said.
“It also makes it difficult for me to perform as an artist, or throw in dance moves that you know me for when invited to gigs.”
He said he has held the show close to his heart ever since its inception, particularly as it is set in Alexandra.
He said he likes to go full force when he’s in a show that is truly important to him.
“I wasn’t able to do so in the last few months so I requested to be written out of the show,” he said.
He thanked the show’s producers and fellow actors for the opportunity and apologised to his followers for his sudden exit.
“I am in high spirits having passed what I believe to be the worst stage of my situation. I thank everyone for the kind messages and prayers during this time.”
