Veteran maskandi musician Bheki Ngcobo, popularly known as Ihash’elimhlophe, is set to make history.

Ngcobo will become the first artist in the maskandi genre to come up with a live DVD recording when he records a live DVD on 16 and 17 September at the Soweto Theatre.

“It took a lot of hard work behind the scenes. I believe the timing of the DVD recording is perfect,” said Ngcobo.

With a career spanning 40 years, Ngcobo has entertained music lovers with hits from over 20 albums.

“I will be taking my fans down memory lane. With the help of my family, I have come up with songs that are dear to me and those that will be enjoyed by my fans,” he said.

Ngcobo would not be drawn into revealing names when asked which artists he has invited to do the concert with him.

“Let us not spoil the surprise,” he said with a giggle.

Showing versatility, Ngcobo endeared himself to music lovers by collaborating perfectly with artists from other genres. Amongst the artists he has worked with are Boom Shaka, DJ Oskido, S’bu Ntshangase, Zola and Mdu Masilela.

Ngcobo also formed a powerful maskandi group Izingqungqulu Zomhlaba consisting of equally-talented artists Phuzekhemisi and Mfazomnyama.

Championed by former Ukhozi FM DJ Bhodloza Nzimande, who is renowned for popularizing the maskandi sound, the group’s songs sought to preach peace and social cohesion amongst people.

Born in Empangeni, he moved to Gauteng where he met his wife Ebony, who is also a singer and actress. They have four children who are also in the entertainment industry.
