‘I will walk in Buthelezi’s footsteps’ – Zulu PM

By Sihle Mavuso

Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, the traditional prime minister of the Zulu monarch, says he will do everything possible to shield and strengthen King Misuzulu kaZwelithini – just like Prince Mangosuthu did for his late father, King Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu.

Buthelezi made this public undertaking on Saturday at Babanango near Ulundi, where the Buthelezi house of Mcakwini hosted an event to celebrate his appointment by King Misuzulu in January this year.

The celebration drew hundreds of villagers and senior members of the Zulu royal family.

“All that I will do to shield and strengthen the throne will be informed by the vision of the Prince of KwaPhindangene (Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi).

“All my actions, my thoughts and decisions will be based on his vision. I will diligently follow in his footsteps,” Buthelezi said.

The new Zulu PM said the late prince had a clear vision about the Zulu monarch and traditional leadership structure, and he wanted this vision to be clearly recognised in the Constitution.

Prince Simphiwe Zulu, the emissary of King Misuzulu from the KwaMinyamanzi royal house, spoke on behalf of the Zulu royal family.

He said the King’s decision to appoint Buthelezi was correct since he was no stranger to Zulu royal circles.

This comment comes as the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal and the provincial government dispute Buthelezi’s appointment, claiming that the position is not constitutionally recognised.
