A Thembisa man has told cops that he rented out his two cars to criminals in the township to rob big businesses and sometimes even drove them himself.

Several cases of business robbery registered at police stations in Thembisa, Norkem Park and Sebenza in recent months said people were robbed at gunpoint by criminals driving a Volkswagen Golf 7.

The car was identified as belonging to the man from Thembisa, who was arrested together with two other robbery suspects.

In one incident, officers were putting fuel into a police vehicle at the BP garage in Thembisa’s Iqgaqga section on 20 April when they spotted a vehicle flagged as wanted.

Officers followed the vehicle, a white Toyota Corolla, from the garage to Thembisa’s Indulweni section and stopped it.

The three men in the vehicle were searched and found in possession of two firearms, a pellet gun and ammunition.

Gauteng SAPS spokesperson Colonel Noxolo Kweza said two of the suspects robbed a petrol station on 19 April just before midnight in Chloorkop.

“The suspects took an undisclosed amount of money, cigarettes, cellphones and a blue Volkswagen Polo” and were “charged for possession of unlicensed firearms and suspected stolen property”.

The suspects were charged and appeared in court on 22 April.

The investigating officer is currently arranging an identification parade with the robbery victims.

“If the victims can positively identify the suspects in an ID parade, then they will be charged on those cases as well,” Kweza said.
