‘I want my son’s body to give him a proper funeral’

The family of Jabulani Mofafane, a seven-year-old who drowned in the Klip River last month, are upset that police divers don’t search for his body and are preventing private divers from searching the water.

Jabulani drowned on 24 June while playing with his cousins near the river.

Since then, police have been patrolling the area, hoping his body will be found.

Jabulani’s mother, Matlala Liboche, told Scrolla.Africa that the police said the water was contaminated with sewage, so divers were not allowed to go in.

“We raised money for private divers, but they were also blocked,” she said.

“I want my son’s body to give him a proper funeral.”

Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Mavela Masondo confirmed that the search is still ongoing.

He said private divers were prohibited from entering the river because it is a crime scene and only police divers are permitted.

“There is fast-moving water and many obstacles like fallen trees can trap divers and it is very dangerous,” Masondo said.
