Hunger drives children to eat wild plants

Children in the Eastern Cape are having to eat wild plants to survive as the Covid-19 crisis leaves many South Africans hungry.

“My children will tell you the taste of every plant in this area, as for the last three months I have been feeding them these plants,” a woman in Peddie told the organisation Gift of the Givers.

Groundup reports that when the organisation’s food truck arrived in Wesley, Peddie, recently people started dancing and singing.

“It is the worst amount of hunger in the 28 years of the Gift of the Givers,” said founder Dr Imtiaz Sooliman. Gift of the Givers says it is Africa’s biggest disaster response organisation.

A new survey released this week shows almost half (47%) of a survey of 7,000 SA households said their household ran out of money to buy food in April 2020.
