  • Unemployed young people from across Vhembe queued at Thohoyandou Stadium on Monday, hoping the defence force would offer them jobs.

Hundreds of young men and women queued outside Thohoyandou Stadium before 5am on Monday. The lines curved around the stadium walls.

Some had travelled from villages across Vhembe. They carried files of documents under their arms. Most said they are unemployed. Many believe the South African National Defence Force could give them a way out.

Inside the stadium, young people moved between military displays and exhibitions. They watched soldiers handle equipment. They asked questions about careers in combat, technology and support services.

Omphulusa Mavhungu from Ha Makuya said the uniform means different things to different people.

“We have ambitions to join the military for a bunch of reasons. We loved seeing soldiers at the State of the Nation Address a few days ago. Some want adventure, others need steady national service and benefits like studying at state expense,” he said.

“I feel a strong sense of duty to serve my country and community, while others see it as a way to get skills and discipline for life. Plus, I love the camaraderie and pride in being part of something as big as this defence force.”

Khuliso Phiri from Thengwe Madzivhanani said this was his first close encounter with soldiers.

“It is the very first time we get so close in proximity with people who protect us,” he said.

Khuliso said the defence force looks for fitness, maths and science marks, and specific qualifications for some roles. Applicants must also pass tests and interviews.

The Fan Park for Armed Forces Day 2026 officially opened on 16 February and runs until 20 February. The main parade will take place on Saturday, 21 February.
