Police in Mpumalanga have arrested a woman, Rose Mnisi, in Lydenburg after she was found carrying human tissue in a plastic bag.
The 39-year-old woman, who works as a cleaner in the maternity ward of a local hospital, was caught by officers from the Lydenburg K9 Unit on Wednesday, 17 September.
Police said they had received a tip-off that Rose was looking for buyers for the tissue while hitchhiking to Nelspruit.
Officers tracked her down along Voortrekker Street in Mashishing, where she was found with a bag containing human placentas.
She was arrested on the spot and charged with illegal possession of human tissue. Police have sent the contents of the bag for forensic analysis.
The suspect appeared in the Mashishing District Court on Thursday, 18 September. She remains in custody while police continue their investigation.
Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, the provincial police spokesperson, confirmed the arrest. “The case was postponed to 25 September for further investigation and for a formal bail application,” he said.
The acting provincial commissioner, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, welcomed the arrest and praised members of the public who provided the information. “This incident once again reflects deep moral decay in the society. The police will continue to work with communities in addressing crime,” he said.
Mnisi is expected to apply for bail when she returns to court.
