Police arrested three suspects who lost control of their vehicle and slammed into a church in Hillbrow on Tuesday afternoon.
Two further suspects have been shot and taken to hospital. A sixth suspect is on the run after a police shootout.
The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officers’ K9 Unit spotted a suspicious vehicle with six occupants in Eastgate. Police followed the vehicle to Bruma, where one of the suspects started firing at the officers. When cops retaliated with gunfire the car raced off.
One of the suspects jumped out of the car and ran away on foot.
The chase continued until the suspects lost control of their vehicle and slammed into a church in Hillbrow, seven kilometres from where the chase began.
A source with knowledge about the incident told Scrolla.Africa that the suspects had robbed a house in Primrose near Germiston, in Ekurhuleni.
“The suspects were seen at Eastgate where they started shooting at the police while driving. Police retaliated by shooting and injuring two of the suspects,” said the source.
“One suspect jumped out of the moving car. Two of them were shot but survived. They were taken to hospital under police guard.”
The source said three others tried to run but were cornered and apprehended. They were taken to the cells at Hillbrow police station. No police were injured during the shootout.
Police recovered what are suspected to be stolen items, including laptops and jewellery, from the vehicle.
One suspect was armed and another one had a fake firearm.
Police are still looking for the suspect who ran away.
