The Hawks are investigating possible fraud regarding the citizenship of Chidimma Vanessa Onwe Adetshina, a former Miss South Africa contestant.
Advocate Constance Moitse, head of Home Affairs’ counter-corruption unit, told Parliament that Chidimma’s mother might have stolen someone’s identity.
She is accused of using the identity of a South African woman who had trouble registering her child in 2001.
This woman later found out that Chidimma was registered under her ID number.
The investigation also includes Chidimma’s father and two Home Affairs officials who might have been involved in the alleged fraud.
Moitse said Home Affairs confirmed the identity of the real South African mother through its records.
The records showed that her birth was registered in Tshwane and that she applied for an ID in 1995.
However, when she returned to Home Affairs, she was told that her ID had been issued in Johannesburg, where she had never applied.
When she tried to register her child in 2001, she discovered that another child, later identified as Chidimma, had already been registered under her ID number.
It took her months of struggle to finally receive a new ID number.
Home Affairs was able to find the documents of the ID’s real owner but couldn’t find any for Chidimma’s mother.
When they visited the addresses listed for both Chidimma’s mother and the South African woman whose ID was allegedly stolen, the details from the stolen ID matched the information in the department’s records.
“An innocent South African mother suffered because she couldn’t register her child,” Moitse said.
Moitse said Home Affairs is seeking legal advice on Chidimma’s citizenship. If her mother loses her South African citizenship, Chidimma would likely lose hers too.
