  • Major General Lesetja Senona arrived at KwaZulu-Natal police headquarters in Durban on Saturday and met a Hawks colonel in his car.
  • Security officials stopped Senona from taking state computers and documents after he failed to sign the mandatory after hours security register.

Police in KwaZulu-Natal say Hawks head Major General Lesetja Senona was stopped from removing state property from his office after security concerns were raised.

The incident happened on Saturday, 31 January, at the provincial police headquarters in Durban.

KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda says Senona arrived at the building and parked his car on the street instead of in his reserved senior manager parking bay.

Netshiunda says Senona met another Hawks colonel inside his vehicle for about 45 minutes.

After the meeting, Senona and his secretary entered the building. Netshiunda says Senona went straight to his office without signing the mandatory after hours security register.

His secretary signed only for herself. The colonel also did not sign.

Netshiunda says these movements raised serious security concerns.

Security officials informed KZN police commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. Netshiunda says police are required to protect sensitive information, especially after Senona previously testified at the Madlanga Commission that he once sent police documents to a private person.

Mkhwanazi then instructed security officers to ask Senona what he was doing in the office.

Netshiunda says Senona decided to leave and tried to take state computers and documents with him.

He was told to leave all state property behind, except his official cellphone.

Netshiunda says Senona voluntarily handed over his office keys.

The police response follows claims by Senona that Mkhwanazi ordered his removal and seized his electronic devices while he was under investigation.

Police say Senona remains an employee of the Hawks and internal processes are continuing.
