Arsenal restored their five-point lead at the top of the Premier League table with a 2-0 win over Brentford, while Aston Villa climbed to third with a thrilling victory over Brighton.

Mikel Merino’s third league goal of the season opened the scoring for Arsenal, as he headed home Ben White’s cross.

Late on, Bukayo Saka sealed the win, converting a pass from Merino after coming on off the bench.

Villa’s Ollie Watkins turned their game around with a quickfire double after Brighton’s early two-goal lead.

Amadou Onana and Donyell Malen added to the scoresheet, with Jan Paul van Hecke netting two goals for the visitors as the clash ended 4-3 to Unai Emery’s side

Elsewhere on the night, Arne Slot’s Liverpool could only manage a 1-1 draw against high flying Sunderland.

Mohamed Salah was dropped to the bench for the second consecutive game while Florian Wirtz looked in good touch as the Reds levelled matters late on at Anfield.

Chelsea were comprehensively beaten as Leeds United took all three points in a 3-1 win over the Blues at Elland Road. Nottingham Forest defeated Wolves 1-0, moving Sean Dyche’s team four points clear of the relegation zone and Crystal Palace climbed to sixth with a 1-0 win over Burnley.

On Tuesday, Manchester City claimed a incredible 5-4 win againt a relentless Fulham side — with Phil Foden netting twice and Erling Haaland looking in good touch.

The Premier League midweek action concludes on Thursday when Manchester United take on West Ham at Old Trafford.
