- Police search for attackers while residents say illegal mining is the cause of the ongoing violence now west of Johannesburg.
Three people are dead and one is in hospital after a shooting in Bekkersdal, west of Johannesburg. The attack happened on Saturday afternoon just after five o’clock.
Residents in the area say they are living in fear. Many people believe the killing is linked to illegal mining in the community.
Police rushed to the scene after hearing reports of gunfire. They found four people with gunshot wounds.
“Three victims were declared dead at the scene, while the fourth victim is currently receiving medical treatment,” said Captain Tintswalo Sibeko.
Captain Tintswalo Sibeko said the gunmen ran away and police have not arrested anyone yet. Officers have started more stop and search operations to find the killers.
This is not the first time the community has seen such violence. In December, nine people were killed in a shooting at the Kwanoxolo Tavern nearby.
Community leader Armstrong Phozeni said residents are tired of how police handle crime. He said things only get better when the police are around.
Armstrong Phozeni said the violence returns as soon as the police leave. He said the community was told that the army would be sent to help, but they have not seen any soldiers yet.
Security expert Andy Mashaile said the government must act quickly. He wants the police and intelligence teams to work together in a single office to stop the crime.
Andy Mashaile said the violence could lead to more problems if it is not stopped soon. He warned that it could even cause attacks against foreigners in the area.
