The family of Colombian footballer Luis Diaz are still hoping for the release of their father.

The National Liberation Army (ELN), a recognised guerrilla group in Colombia, has admitted to the abduction of Diaz’s father.

Local media have reported that they are prepared to let him go, but they need “security guarantees” before his safe return.

This development comes in the wake of an increase of military and police presence in the area, intensifying the search efforts for the hostage, which the ELN claims could jeopardise the planned release.

Diaz’s father, Luis Manuel Diaz, was abducted on 28 October in Barrancas, Colombia, where he was taken at gunpoint. His wife, who was briefly held, was later found abandoned in a vehicle as security forces narrowed in on the kidnappers.

Luis Diaz, who plays for Liverpool, made an appeal after a recent match, revealing a message beneath his jersey that read “Freedom for Papa”, and issued a statement begging for the immediate release of his father.

The ELN has signalled its intention to release Diaz, depending upon the condition of security guarantees that would allow for a safe and prompt handover.

The Colombian government remains firm, deploying substantial resources in a determined effort to locate and rescue the elder Diaz.
