- Police arrested a groom and his father for drink driving in Newcastle while they were travelling to a wedding ceremony.
- The Newcastle wedding was cancelled after the groom and his father were caught driving while they were under the influence.
A groom and his father were arrested for drink driving in Newcastle just an hour before a wedding was supposed to start.
The groom and his father were caught driving under the influence while they were on their way to the venue. Because they were taken to a police cell, the wedding ceremony had to be cancelled.
KwaZulu-Natal transport minister Siboniso Duma shared the news after Easter Weekend roadblocks. The minister was leading a campaign called #Nenzani La Ezweni across the province.
In a separate case on the same day, police arrested a university lecturer for drunk driving. Although the man is Zulu, he told the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) police that he wanted to speak only English in his cell.
The lecturer was taken from his vehicle and put into a police van after he was caught.
In Margate, near Port Shepstone, a farmer was also arrested for being over the legal alcohol limit. The farmer tried to bribe the police by offering them a sheep if they did not arrest him. He told the officers he wanted to see his wife and his friends.
The RTI said these arrests were part of the province’s efforts to keep the roads safe during the holiday period.
