  • Government confirms discussions with Russian authorities to bring back 17 South African men stuck near Russia’s war front lines.
  • Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya says the men face real danger and returning them home safely is a priority for President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The government says it is working to bring home 17 South African men who are stuck in Russia in what it calls a very dangerous situation.

The men are believed to be near the front lines of Russia’s war. Their safety has now become a top concern for the government.

Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya says talks with Russian authorities are already under way. He spoke at a media briefing in Pretoria.

“They are in a dangerous environment and are facing grave danger,” Magwenya said.

He said the government is speaking to authorities in both Russia and Ukraine. The main focus, however, is on talks with officials in Russia.

Magwenya said the men have not been forgotten. He said bringing them back to South Africa safely is a top priority for the government and President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The men reportedly travelled to Russia after being promised special training. Instead of training, they ended up close to active fighting.

Their situation has caused concern among families back home, who fear for their lives and want them returned as soon as possible.

Magwenya said the government understands the seriousness of the situation. He said every effort is being made to remove the men from danger.

Reports about how the men were recruited are now also under investigation by the Hawks, according to TimesLIVE and other media outlets.
