Rising gospel artist Luthando Makaluza has surprised fans with his latest single Ujesu Uhamba Nathi by featuring an unexpected guest – Congolese vocalist Ladony jeune lion fåible-Fört.
The song, which means “Jesus walks with us”, mixes rich isiXhosa worship with soulful Lingala harmonies. This cross-cultural fusion is rare in South African gospel music.
“We wanted to show that worship knows no borders,” says Luthando. “Whether in Xhosa or Lingala, the message remains the same: Jesus is with us.”
The 52-year-old Eastern Cape-born artist now lives in Johannesburg where he has built his reputation. He previously appeared as a pastor on Isidingo – The Need and founded the Johannesburg Choir. He was also a member of Clash of the Choirs.
Luthando has been performing in churches and local festivals since releasing his music. His songs mix traditional gospel with contemporary African sounds, all inspired by his personal testimony and faith.
He wrote Ujesu Uhamba Nathi during a tough time in his life. “I felt alone, like God was silent,” he shares. “But through prayer and worship, I realized He was walking with me all along. That’s what this song is about: hope and presence in hard times.”
The music video appears on Trace, 1 Gospel and Dumisa. Listeners are already praising the unity and emotion behind the song.
On 6 September Makaluza will perform at a gospel launch at Praise the Lord Worshippers Centre in Zondi 2, Soweto.
