Goldmax lifts lid on Distruction Boyz split

By Bathandwa Ndlangisa

Thobani “Que” Mgobhozi and Zipho “Goldmax” Mthembu first disbanded the Distruction Boyz during the hard lockdown in 2020.

Both went on to release solo albums before reuniting in 2022, but the award-winning duo announced their split just months after reuniting.

In an exclusive interview with Scrolla.Africa, Goldmax exposed the reasons behind the split.

“People have been assuming that Que and I have been fighting, but that’s far from the truth. We’re just taking a break to focus on our side music projects, businesses and personal responsibilities,” said Goldmax.

When asked about the possibility of brand damage from the constant splits, Goldmax said as an individual he is used to dealing with perceived brand risks.

“Que and I live life with no regrets. We are aware that things can go wrong and our credibility could be in danger,” he said.

“We spent a lot of time deliberating on how to deal with the aftermath of our temporary break from Distruction Boyz.”

He said they agreed to remain true to what made them who they are.

“We are two individuals who take every mistake as a lesson and every challenge as an opportunity to grow,” he said.

Goldmax went on to say that the temporary break is intended to give him and Que a chance to experience each other better as individual artists.

“We will always be Distruction Boyz at heart, but for now, it’s time for us to spread our wings and reach new heights,” he said.

According to Goldmax, the split of Distruction Boyz is not the end of an era but history has shown that many bands in South Africa have made that promise only to end their working relationship forever.

Recent examples include duos like Black Motion and Amaroto, who ended their musical partnerships in a similar way to Distruction Boyz.
