  • Well-known traditional healer Dr Maweni must wait in jail until Monday for a bail hearing over an assault charge.
  • Police also investigating her for four murders after fellow sangoma’s claims on social media.

Famous sangoma Dr Maweni will stay in jail until Monday when she applies for bail at the Protea Magistrates Court.

The 39-year-old traditional healer, whose real name is Makgotso Mofokeng, was arrested on Sunday in Mondeor. She faces charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm from 2019.

Police say they are also investigating her for four murders in Eldorado Park, Mondeor, Orange Farm and Bekkersdal between 2020 and 2024.

The arrest comes after a bitter public fight with fellow sangoma Gogo Skhotheni on social media last month.

Maweni angered Skhotheni by posting videos of herself doing rituals with a fake coffin meant to represent Skhotheni’s dead child.

Skhotheni hit back on TikTok, claiming Maweni was behind several unsolved murders.

“She has known about the cases for the last two years but nothing has come out of the investigations,” said Skhotheni.

“She has confessed to the cases while drunk to her family and her brother shared the information with me but I have not said anything.

“But now that she is trying to perform rituals with my late child’s body I will fight to the bitter end,” she said.
