With the release of the new series The Brave Ones, the South African film industry will finally tap into the fantasy world of African goddesses and heroes.

Netflix has announced the release of its upcoming supernatural drama series, which will launch this spring on 16 September, with familiar faces in the cast.

“Created by renowned film director, writer and actor Akin Omotoso, the captivating six-episode series unfolds in the parallel worlds of modern-day South Africa and the supernatural world of African gods and divine beings,” announced Netflix in a statement.

Lead actress Sthandile Nkosi plays the character of the strong Ntsiki Gasa, a mystical being reincarnated as a human who sets out to avenge her sister’s death.

Gasa has to face a “powerful and determined enemy”, Ayanda Mbatha, who is played by actress Nomalanga Nkosi.

Nkosi appears alongside legendary actor Tony Kgoroge, who plays the husband of her character, Luthando Mbatha, who is described as a “heartless” land-grabbing property developer.

“To defeat her formidable enemies and save her family from destruction, Ntsiki must learn to use and harness her superpowers.”

Kgoroge is not the only member of his family on the cast, as his equally talented wife of 20 years, Sthandiwe Kgoroge, also got the call to star in this unique series.

She has also starred in another thrilling 2021 Netflix series called Dead Places and revealed it took three years to make the six upcoming episodes of The Brave Ones.

“A beautiful labour of love from us at Netflix it has taken us three years to build. I proudly present to you, THE BRAVE ONES,” wrote Sthandile on Instagram.

“I’m beyond blessed and honoured to present to you this beautiful story about our ancestors and the role they play in our lives,” she added before thanking the cast and director Omotoso for trusting her with the character.

“I can only hope and pray that you can see our hearts, blood sweat and tears in this beautiful work of art,” she concluded.
