Gift of the Givers digging deep to rescue hospital

The Gift of the Givers have started drilling for water at the Rahima Moosa Hospital to save them from a critical water crisis.

The hospital in Coronationville, Johannesburg has not had water since 19 May.

Said Gift of the Givers founder, Dr Imitaaz Sooliman: “Water delivery to the hospital and to the region shut down without any clear explanation from the relevant water authorities.”

He said the water shortages due to poor water infrastructure in the City of Joburg could not have come at a worse time as South Africa has entered its third wave of Covid-19 infections.

The hospital approached Gift of the Givers in the hope of receiving bottled water, portable toilets and water tankers or any other help to alleviate the desperate situation at the hospital.

A drilling site has already been identified and been permitted for Gift of the Givers to begin drilling to provide the hospital with the running water they need to function at a safe and optimal level.

The crisis became worse when the Charlotte Maxeke Hospital was shut down due to a fire in April and Rahima Moosa hospital took over their patients.

The increased number of patients without running water increases risk of infection.
