The summer of football has well and truly arrived with the 2024 European Championships kicking off in Germany this weekend.

The action may have only begun on Friday, but the games come thick and fast, with the opening two days of football already delivering 16 goals.

The hosts kicked off the party with a 5-1 rout of Scotland, who never looked close to the levels of their German counterparts.

Julian Nagelsmann’s troops were full of flair in Friday night’s affair, enjoying both the biggest win by a host nation in their opening Euro match and their biggest ever victory in the competition’s history.

Bundesliga player of the season Florian Wirtz, Bayern’s Jamal Musiala and Arsenal’s Kai Havertz made it 3-0 before the break as the visitors failed to register a single attempt in the first half.

In the second period, Niclas Fuellkrug made it four before Emre Can came on to score after a late call up meant he joined up with the squad just days ago.

Antonio Rudiger’s own goal to make it 5-1 means he is now Scotland’s joint top scorer in tournament football in the last 25 years, a statistic that the Andrew Robertson led side will want to get rid off as the campaign progresses.

In Saturday’s action, Switzerland beat Hungary 3-1 while Spain came out 3-0 victors over Croatia courtesy of goals from Alvaro Morata, Fabian Ruiz and Dani Carvajal.

Defending champions Italy came back from behind to defeat Albania 2-1 in the late game, with all three goals coming within the opening quarter of an hour in Dortmund.

England are in action on Sunday as Gareth Southgate’s men take on Serbia at 9pm. That one comes after the Netherlands face Poland (3pm) and Slovenia take on Denmark (6pm).
