Jamal Musiala stood out as Germany beat Hungary 2-0 to become the first team to advance to the knockout stages of Euro 2024.
The Bayern Munich forward was outstanding, scoring midway through the first half and nearly adding another with a powerful shot just inches past the post.
Hungary was frustrated by Musiala’s opener, arguing that Ilkay Gundogan fouled defender Willi Orban before setting up Musiala to score.
However, a video assistant referee (VAR) check kept the decision, and Musiala celebrated with his teammates in front of Hungary supporters.
Hungary thought they had equalised just before half-time, but Roland Sallai’s header was ruled out for offside.
Germany extended their lead in the second half when Gundogan easily scored past goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi.
After a dominant 5-1 win over Scotland, Germany faced a tougher challenge against Hungary, who threatened at times and defended stubbornly.
Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai showcased his skills on set pieces, with one curling effort needing a save from Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. Szoboszlai had another close chance in the first half but was blocked by Jonathan Tah.
Germany secured six points from their opening two games and confirmed their place in the last 16.
A victory over Switzerland in Frankfurt on Sunday would see them through as Group A winners.
Hungary coach Marco Rossi criticised the officiating, saying, “I’ve never complained in my career as a coach. I’ve never looked for excuses but what the referee did tonight – I mean, come on.
“It’s something that I think even the Germans have seen – the referee had double standards. The VAR at this level didn’t say anything. Germany would have won anyway because they were better than us but the referee was the worst on the pitch.”
