Georgia make history at Euro 2024

The lowest ranked team at the European Championships shocked the world with an incredible win over Portugal to qualify for the last 16.

In their first ever major tournament, Georgia became the first European nation to qualify from the group stage as they picked up a 2-0 win on matchday three.

After losing to Turkey and drawing 1-1 with Czechia, the underdogs went a goal to the good inside just two minutes against Portugal courtesy of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

Early in the second half, Georges Mikautadze converted from the spot to double the lead and make their dream a reality, as they held on for a vital three points.

Giorgi Mamardashvili was a marvel to behold between the sticks, keeping out Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal on multiple occasions.

Ronaldo failed to score in the group stage of a major international tournament for the first time in his career; and as his side prepare to face Slovenia in the next round, the icon will look to find form.

Georgia’s win has done a huge favour to other sides, too. With England, now set to take on Slovakia in the last 16 instead of the Netherlands, who will in turn face Romania.

In the other game in Group F, Turkey sealed second spot with a 2-1 win over ten-man Czechia, who are officially eliminated from the competition.

LAST 16 FIXTURES:

Switzerland vs. Italy
Germany vs. Denmark
England vs. Slovakia
Spain vs. Georgia
France vs. Belgium
Portugal vs. Slovenia
Romania vs. Netherlands
Austria vs. Turkey
