The Gauteng Department of Education has ordered an independent investigation into the death of a grade 3 learner at Alberview Primary School in Ekurhuleni.

This comes after child was injured while playing with classmates during break on 1 August 2025. He was rushed to hospital, but later died.

The department’s spokesperson, Steve Mabona, confirmed that an independent law firm will be brought in to investigate what happened on the day.

Mabona said the department wants the facts behind the boy’s death to be established and accountability ensured. “We are hopeful that this investigation will uncover the facts behind the learner’s passing, ensuring accountability,” he said.

He added that the safety and wellbeing of learners remains the department’s priority, and the investigation must give a clear picture of the events that led to the tragedy.

Meanwhile the boy’s family and other stakeholders will be introduced to the law firm once it is formally appointed. The department said this will help set out the terms of reference for the probe.

The department’s Psycho-Social Support Unit has also been sent to Alberview Primary to provide counselling and emotional support to learners, teachers and families affected by the boy’s death.

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane sent condolences to the family, school and community. “We express our deepest condolences to family, his school community, and all who knew him,” said Chiloane.
