Billionaire Bill Gates has invested around $12 million (R206 million) in an attempt to stop cows from burping and farting so much.
Rumin8, the startup based in Perth, Australia, aims to reduce methane emissions from cows by providing the animals with a seaweed-based diet.
The company claims this diet will cut methane emissions by improving the cows’ digestion process.
Methane is the second most common greenhouse gas after carbon dioxide. It is 25 times stronger than carbon dioxide in keeping heat within the atmosphere, Business Insider reported.
Gates has a taste for sustainability and last week spoke on social media platform Reddit regarding sustainable meat.
“There are companies making ‘beef’ in new ways and people working to still use cows but reduce the methane emissions,” Gates wrote.
“I think eventually these products will be very good even though their share is small today.”
The Microsoft co-founder is not the only person looking to reduce methane emissions to ease climate change.
French food company Danone claimed they would implement a major cut to their emissions produced from its milk farms. The company said it would cut 30% of its emissions by 2030.
New Zealand are also in the process of increasing their livestock tax from 2025.
