Police have sent more officers to Bishop Lavis, Cape Town, after gunmen killed seven people and injured another on Kogelberg Street on Thursday night.

Western Cape police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa said reports from the scene indicate that at approximately 8.40pm, an armed suspect entered an informal dwelling on Kogelberg Street and fired several shots at the occupants.

“Six people died at the scene while two others were wounded,” said Potelwa.

“One of the injured victims died in hospital on Friday morning, bringing the death toll to seven.”

The other wounded person is still receiving treatment.

The Anti-Gang Unit is investigating the murders. No one has been arrested yet. The victims were aged between 24 and 55.

“The Bishop Lavis incident happened on the back of another shooting where five people were shot and killed in Atlantis early on Wednesday evening,” said Potelwa.

Police chief Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile has instructed detectives to use every available resource to find the killers of both attacks, which are believed to be gang-related.

Local councillor Angus McKenzie thanked the police for sending more officers to the area.

“These murders are part of an ongoing, ever-increasing gang war currently taking place in Valhalla Park and Bishop Lavis. These two areas have been affected daily by shootings and murders,” said McKenzie.

“Law-abiding citizens should never need to live in such fear. These ongoing shootings also place huge pressure on basic services in the area.”

Three people have since been arrested.
