- Diesel drops by up to R3.59 a litre and petrol by up to R2.01 a litre from Wednesday, the government confirmed on Tuesday.
- A short-term discount on fuel tax has now ended, but oil prices fell enough to still bring you a big saving at the pump.
Fuel is getting cheaper from Wednesday. The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources confirmed the price cuts on Tuesday.
Petrol 93 drops by R2.01 a litre. Petrol 95 drops by R1.96 a litre. Diesel falls even more, by between R3.14 and R3.59 a litre depending on the type.
The department said this is mainly because the price of oil has dropped around the world. A peace deal between the United States and Iran helped bring oil prices down, easing fears about supply.
The rand also got slightly stronger against the US dollar, which added a small extra saving at the pump.
Earlier this year, government gave drivers a short-term discount on fuel tax to help with high prices. That discount has now ended completely. From Wednesday, the full fuel tax is back.
Even so, the drop in oil prices was big enough to still bring a major saving at the pump, even with the tax back in full.
Paraffin also gets much cheaper, dropping by R5.23 a litre. Gas prices go up slightly, by 16 cents a kilogram, and by 19 cents a kilogram in the Western Cape.
The department said the exact prices for each area will be published on Tuesday.
