- Petrol is cheaper by up to 66 cents a litre, giving drivers a small but welcome break after fuel prices jumped in December.
- Diesel drops by as much as R1.50 a litre, which could help lower taxi, transport and delivery costs in the weeks ahead.
Fuel prices have come down across the country, bringing some relief to motorists at the start of the year.
The price of 93 unleaded petrol is down by 62 cents a litre, while 95 unleaded petrol dropped by 66 cents. Diesel users get the biggest relief, with prices falling by R1.37 to R1.50 a litre, depending on the type.
Paraffin is also cheaper, with the price dropping by R1.10 a litre, which helps households that use it for cooking or heating.
The Central Energy Fund says the drop is mainly because the rand has strengthened and global oil prices have come down slightly over the past month.
From Wednesday, inland motorists will pay R20.64 a litre for 93 petrol and R20.75 for 95. Inland diesel now costs between R18.42 and R18.52 a litre.
At the coast, 95 petrol is down to R20.58 a litre, while diesel costs between R17.59 and R17.76 a litre.
Lower fuel prices could ease some pressure on household budgets and transport costs as people settle back into work and school routines.
