Victor Osimhen’s remarkable journey from the streets of Olusosun in Lagos to become the African Footballer of the Year for 2023 is a story of determination and victory.
The 24-year-old Napoli striker was honoured at the Confederation of African Football (Caf) awards, beating out Egypt’s Mohamed Salah and Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi for the award.
Osimhen’s rise is a story of overcoming adversity. Growing up poor, he had to sell newspapers and water to support his family.
His commitment and passion for football shone through as he described his journey from “the trenches” to becoming a celebrated figure in African and world football.
After his performance in scoring 26 goals and leading Napoli to their first Italian league title in 33 years, Osimhen has been recognised as the first Nigerian to win the Caf’s men’s award since Nwankwo Kanu in 1999.
His achievements have drawn praise from football legends like Emmanuel Adebayor and Didier Drogba, BBC reported.
Osimhen’s journey to success was marked by a significant milestone at the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in 2015, where he emerged as the top scorer.
His journey wasn’t smooth, with initial challenges at German club Wolfsburg and an important loan to Charleroi in Belgium.
His rise continued at Lille, leading to his move to Napoli for one of the highest fees ever paid for an African player.
Despite personal losses and injuries, including the death of his parents in 2020 and a facial injury that still requires him to wear a protective mask, Osimhen has shown resilience and dedication.
With the likes of fellow Nigerian Victor Boniface and other rising African stars making their mark, Osimhen’s success could inspire the Nigerian national team to new heights, especially with the upcoming Afcon tournament.
