Four off-duty police officers from Durban Central police station were in a car accident that left one officer dead. The officer, a police constable, died at the scene.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed the incident to Scrolla.Africa.

“A case of reckless and negligent driving, as well as culpable homicide, has been registered at Durban Central police station,” he said.

Colonel Netshiunda said the accident took place at the corner of KE Masinga Road and Florence Nzama Street on Friday night.

“One police constable was certified dead at the scene, while three others were rushed to hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the other vehicle was also taken to hospital, also with injuries,” he said.

The cause of the accident is still being investigated.

Scrolla.Africa has learned that two VW Polos collided at the intersection. When officers arrived, they discovered one of the vehicles was driven by an off-duty cop.

“There were four passengers, three of whom were also police officers stationed at Durban Central police station,” said a source.

The injured officers were taken to hospital, while the deceased’s body was taken to Phoenix Mortuary, and the vehicle was towed away.

None of the off-duty officers had firearms with them.
