Four people have been killed in mob justice attacks in Khayelitsha.

Police said three bodies were burnt beyond recognition in the Enkandla section of the township. A fourth body, that of a 30-year-old man, was found nearby with multiple stab wounds.

The killings happened on Saturday night. Police said they were first called to the scene of one burnt body, then found two more in the same area. Hours later, they discovered the stabbed man in the settlement.

Western Cape SAPS condemned the killings, saying they bear the hallmarks of mob justice. Colonel André Traut said: “Taking the law into one’s own hands is a criminal offence and will not be tolerated.”

Residents told Scrolla.Africa they believe the dead men had been terrorising the community. One woman said the victims had been breaking into houses and hijacking cars. “If criminals were punished, residents would not take the law into their own hands,” she said.

Ward 99 councillor Lonwabo Mqina said the area’s high crime rate is made worse by poor lighting and no access roads.

In a separate incident on Sunday afternoon in Gugulethu, two men were shot dead inside a shack. They had been chased by armed men, who tore off zinc sheets to get inside before shooting them.

Police said investigations into both incidents are ongoing.
