Four police officers have been arrested after alleged illegal mining boss Neo “Tiger” Tshoaeli escaped from custody in Stilfontein.

The officers appeared in the Stilfontein court on Friday, where they were granted bail.

North West’s acting police boss, Major General Patrick Asaneng, announced the arrests at the court.

Tiger slipped away after being caught with hundreds of other illegal miners in abandoned mine shafts in Stilfontein earlier this month.

The arrests were part of a national crackdown on illegal mining called Operation Vala Umgodi, which has seen nearly 80 miners die.

Police bosses were furious about Tiger’s escape and promised to punish anyone who helped him get away.
