KwaZulu-Natal police shot dead four suspected cash-in-transit robbers during a gun battle in Estcourt on Wednesday afternoon.
KwaZulu-Natal provincial police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the four men were killed during a shootout with traffic officers.
Netshiunda said several suspects who were travelling in three vehicles forced the armoured cash vehicle to stop and robbed security guards of their firearms before stealing the money.
“The suspects were then engaged in a shootout with Road Traffic Inspectorate officers – a shootout which saw two officers sustaining injuries,” he said.
He said the Estcourt Highway Patrol officers then responded and were also involved in a shootout with the suspects. “Four suspects were shot and killed during the shootout.
“Two AK-47 assault rifles, an R5, a pellet gun and an undisclosed amount of money, suspected to have been robbed from the cash-in-transit vehicle, were found in the possession of the suspects.”
He said one of the suspects’ vehicles was found to have been hijacked in Germiston, Gauteng, earlier this month. Police are in pursuit of more suspects.
