Four people have been arrested after former world boxing champion Zolani โLast Bornโ Tete was shot dead outside his home in Mdantsane.
Police made the arrests on Saturday and Sunday in KuGompo City, Mdantsane and Scenery Park, according to The Citizen.
The suspects are aged 22, 27, 27 and 28.
The 22-year-old has been charged with murder and attempted murder and is expected to appear in the Mdantsane Magistrateโs Court on Monday.
The attempted murder charge relates to a 27-year-old woman who was wounded in the shooting while travelling as a passenger.
She remains in hospital.
A 30-year-old man who was arrested earlier has since been released and is now regarded as a possible witness.
Police say investigators are following more leads and further arrests are expected.
Eastern Cape MEC for Transport and Community Safety Xolile Nqatha welcomed the arrests.
โThese arrests once more serve as a clear demonstration that anyone committing a crime in this province will be apprehended and held accountable,โ he said.
Nqatha said he hoped the investigation would bring those responsible to justice and give Teteโs family closure.
Teteโs relatives said they were struggling to understand why he had been killed.
โWe do not know why someone would be so heartless,โ the family said.
Known as โLast Bornโ, he became a world boxing champion and remained a respected figure in his hometown.
Police said the investigation is continuing.
